About MP4, and why convert to MP3
MP4 is the universal video container β almost every phone, camera and screen recorder saves H.264 video with AAC audio inside it. That is why it plays everywhere, and why it is also the most common source when you only want the sound.
Pull the audio out of a video to listen on the go, make a ringtone, or reuse a lecture, podcast or song without carrying the video track. The MP3 is a fraction of the original size and plays on literally anything.
Quality guidance for this conversion
MP3 is lossy, and your MP4 audio (AAC) already is too, so a second encode loses a little. At 192 kbps music stays clean for everyday listening; 128 kbps is plenty for speech and podcasts. Picking 320 kbps will not restore quality the source never had β it just makes a bigger file.
Frequently asked questions
Will the MP3 sound worse than the video?
Barely, at 192 kbps. The audio is re-encoded from AAC to MP3, so there is a small generational loss, but on headphones and speakers it is hard to notice. Speech survives 128 kbps easily.
Does the video affect the result?
No β the video track is discarded and only the audio is converted, which is why an hour of video becomes a small audio file.
How large a video can I convert?
Files work best under 500 MB; the hard limit is 1 GB for browser stability. Everything runs on your device, so a long video just takes longer, it never uploads.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Conversion runs in your browser with ffmpeg.wasm. Your file never leaves your device.
