About MP4, and why convert to GIF
GIF is a 1980s image format that stores short animations as a series of pictures: only 256 colours, no sound, and no real video compression. That is why a GIF of a few seconds can be bigger than the MP4 it came from β and why it still rules reactions and memes.
A GIF loops on its own in chats, comments and documents where video will not autoplay or is not allowed at all. It needs no player and no play button: drop it in a message and it just moves.
Quality guidance for this conversion
Keep it short, small and slow: a few seconds, reduced resolution, and 10β15 frames per second. Every extra second and every extra pixel costs file size fast, because GIF compresses so poorly. Trim the exact moment first with the Video Trimmer, then convert that clip β never the whole video. And remember the sound is dropped: GIF cannot carry audio.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my GIF bigger than the MP4?
GIF compression is from 1987 β it stores every frame almost fully, while MP4 only stores what changes. Short clips at small sizes are the only way to keep a GIF sane.
Does the GIF keep the sound?
No. GIF has no audio track at all, so the sound is dropped in conversion.
Will it loop?
Yes, in most chats and browsers GIFs loop automatically β that is half the point of the format.
How long should the clip be?
Aim for a few seconds. Under about 10 seconds at modest resolution you get a shareable file; beyond that the size explodes.
