About GIF, and why convert to MP4
A GIF is a silent, looping sequence of pictures in at most 256 colours — great for reactions, terrible as a video file. It is big for its length, has no sound, and many platforms (Instagram, WhatsApp video, X) prefer or require real video.
Turning a GIF into an MP4 gives you the same moving picture as a proper video: far smaller, smoother in feeds, and accepted anywhere video is accepted. A meme that was 8 MB as a GIF is often under 1 MB as an MP4.
Quality guidance for this conversion
Keep Original resolution — the GIF is already low-resolution and low-colour, and shrinking it further only hurts. The MP4 cannot add colours the GIF never had, but H.264 compression will cut the size dramatically with no visible change.
Frequently asked questions
Will the MP4 have sound?
No — the GIF never had any, so the MP4 is silent too.
Will it still loop?
A GIF loops by itself; an MP4 plays once in most players. If you need a loop, set it in the player or editor you post with.
The file picker does not show my GIF — what do I do?
Drag and drop it onto the converter instead. The picker filters to video and audio files, but dropping a GIF works fine.
Why bother — does it really get smaller?
Usually a lot smaller. GIF stores nearly every frame fully; MP4 stores only what changes, so the same clip compresses far better.
